From the President’s Desk
As communications technologies advance…so do the tactics and schemes carried out by malicious actors. It’s more than the unwanted inbound phone calls selling you health coverage, funeral benefits, or lower energy rates. You need to be aware of attacks on your data. Attacks on your bank account and IRA. And attacks on your business.
Would-be criminals exploit everyday digital tools like email, texts, social media, and more recently, artificial intelligence. They look to deceive victims…your staff…into creating an opening for access to your network and systems. Common scams include phishing emails that impersonate trusted
companies or co-workers, attempts to click on an attached file, and fake tech support calls. Many of which attempt to create a heightened sense of urgency to entice victims to act quickly (without appropriate review, thought, or consultation with IT resources).
Awareness and education are essential defenses. Implore your staff to verify sources, avoid clicking suspicious links, use strong passwords, and keep software updated. Protecting against scams involves practicing simple but consistent security habits. Common measures include verifying the identity of senders before responding to emails, closely reviewing sender information (accuracy of address, consistent naming convention, correct spelling), avoid clicking on attachments or unknown links, and verifying the identity of callers. In the absence of 100% certainty, consult your trusted IT resource. And of course, keep devices, apps, and security software updated to help block known threats.
Reach out to your trusted technology advisor or IT support resource to review the measures you are currently enforcing, or those you should be undertaking. Protect your data and yourselves.

NONprofits of AMERICA
The United States is home to approximately 1.9 million registered nonprofit and philanthropic organizations 1. These organizations play a vital role in addressing community needs in human services, healthcare, and education. They enhance quality of life through their support of arts, cultural, and faith-based institutions, and are essential partners in environmental protection efforts. Nonprofits also foster social connection and promote civic participation.
3 Quick Facts about Nonprofits:
- Nonprofits are the most trusted institutions in the United States.
- They are the third largest private employer sector.
- They are economic drivers, adding up to $1.5 trillion to the economy annually, contributing over 5% of America’s GDP.

2 Major Challenges for Nonprofits
- Volunteering: Volunteers usually cannot replace professional staff, however many Nonprofits rely on them to fill important roles. But formal volunteering has decreased in recent years. The beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted volunteering. Although volunteering rebounded afterward, fewer people reported formal volunteering in 2023 (28%) than in 2017 or 2019 (30%), and those people also volunteered fewer hours (Schlachter & Marshall,2024).
- Funding: Nonprofits are closely associated with donations, but they engage in other activities to fund themselves, including membership dues, fees for program services, gifts, grants, investment income, and royalties. However, they always face significant funding challenges, like reliance on unpredictable grants, government funding disruptions, and restrictions on how funds can be utilized.
